Morocco expands green hydrogen ambitions with six new projects

The North African nation of Morocco is accelerating its clean energy ambitions with the approval of six new green hydrogen projects worth $32.5 billion. Spread across three southern regions, the projects will produce green hydrogen that will be used to manufacture green steel, green ammonia and synthetic fuels.

  • Morocco’s focus on green hydrogen derivatives is a strategic move to capture high-value markets. These products align with global decarbonisation goals and offer faster revenue returns than raw hydrogen exports.

  • With at least 13 announced projects, Morocco trails only Egypt (15) in Africa’s hydrogen race. However, by prioritising industrial fuels and materials, Morocco gains a competitive edge, especially as industries seek low-carbon inputs to meet tightening emission regulations, like the EU’s carbon border tax.

  • Our take: Morocco’s decision to produce green steel and synthetic fuels sets it apart from other African countries..… Read more (2 min)

A massive green hydrogen plant is set to be built in South Sinai, Eastern Egypt, at a cost of $17 billion, marking the country’s largest project by investment. The facility will be completed in three phases by 2035, producing up to 0.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green hydrogen for export to Europe via the Suez Canal.

  • The project is Egypt’s boldest move yet to lead Africa’s hydrogen economy, but the country has the continent’s widest gap between announced projects and real progress. Of the 15 projects announced, few have moved beyond early planning stages, raising questions about whether this ambitious plant can break the cycle of stalled developments.

  • South Sinai’s proximity to the Suez Canal gives Egypt direct access to Europe’s energy markets. But location alone won’t secure dominance; Egypt will need competitive pricing, reliable infrastructure and investor-friendly policies to beat faster-moving rivals like Morocco and Namibia, which are racing to capture early demand.

  • Our take: Egypt’s green hydrogen ambitions are well-documented — but progress on the ground has been slow.… Read more (2 min)

In the near future, four key green hydrogen events are scheduled across the continent and beyond, in Berlin, Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, and Windhoek. These gatherings, ranging from focused workshops to large-scale summits, will unite governments, investors, policymakers and developers to drive Africa’s green hydrogen sector forward.

  • The events offer Africa a strategic voice in shaping the global hydrogen market. As countries like Germany set import standards and sustainability requirements, African stakeholders can influence policies, advocate for fair trade, and ensure the continent’s hydrogen boom delivers both international value and local development.

  • These events align with Africa’s growing role as a cornerstone of the global green hydrogen market, offering a stage to solidify the continent’s leadership. As African nations advance megaprojects and refine policy frameworks, participating in global forums helps synchronize local progress with international market dynamics.
