Landmark green iron plant produces first hydrogen
The HyIron Oshivela Green Hydrogen Project in Namibia, Africa’s first green iron plant, has reached a key milestone with the successful production of its first green hydrogen. The gas will be used to produce direct reduced iron (DRI), which will be exported to Europe to help decarbonise the region’s steel sector. |
Namibia’s green iron milestone positions Africa as a potential supplier in the global low-carbon steel market. With abundant iron ore and renewable energy, other countries like South Africa and Mauritania could follow.
The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) favors low-carbon steel imports, boosting Namibia’s green iron prospects. However, most African nations lack policies and investment frameworks for green hydrogen and steelmaking.
Our take: The Oshivela project proves that green iron production is viable in Africa, but one project alone won’t transform the continent’s role in the global steel industry.… Read more (2 min)
This month’s green hydrogen jobs board lists 11 vacancies across Africa. Southern Africa leads, with South Africa posting eight and Namibia one, reinforcing the region’s role as a key green hydrogen hub. North Africa has one vacancy in Egypt, while another role spans the broader African region |
Among the top hiring companies, Acciona Energía stands out with three job openings. Other notable employers include Globeleq, GIZ, HDF Energy, Nikkiso Clean Energy and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), signaling a strong mix of private sector, international development and government-backed initiatives fueling job creation.
Technical and project management roles dominate this month’s listings. Key skills include hydrogen system design, electrolysis, engineering, commissioning, quality control, project implementation, environmental impact assessment, stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance.

Germany's Siemens Energy remains key in Africa’s green hydrogen sector, deploying Silyzer PEM electrolysers in Egypt and Namibia. While also active in fossil fuels and renewables, our analysis shows that its hiring spree has slowed after a period of rapid growth, signaling a shift from expansion to consolidation. |
Over the past year, Siemens Energy’s workforce in Africa grew by 20%, but this rate has slowed in recent months, with only 10% growth in the last six months. While hiring still outpaces departures—new hires accounted for 23% of the workforce compared to a 7% attrition rate—the pace of recruitment is clearly cooling.
Siemens Energy remains concentrated in Egypt, which accounts for 64 percent of its workforce, followed by Johannesburg at 8 percent and Nigeria at 7 percent. Nigeria, Algeria, and Angola are growing but remain secondary locations to Egypt, reflecting a cautious expansion approach.
Our take: Siemens Energy’s workforce trends reveal a company at a transition point.… Read more (2 min)
