South Africa launches green hydrogen guidelines
South Africa has launched two key tools to guide the development of its green hydrogen sector: an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) guideline to support environmental assessment experts in the sector and the South African Green Hydrogen Potential Atlas, an online geospatial tool designed to map potential green hydrogen hotspots. |
South Africa’s green hydrogen push comes at a pivotal moment. The Paris Agreement’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal has accelerated the global clean energy shift, with green hydrogen demand expected to hit 150–500 million metric tonnes annually. Africa’s abundant wind and solar resources position the continent as a key supplier for Western nations seeking sustainable energy solutions.
For instance, The EU aims for carbon neutrality by 2040 and plans to import 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, with Africa as a key supplier. South Africa’s rich renewable resources, long coastline, and developed ports give it a strategic edge in producing affordable green hydrogen to meet rising global demand.
Our take: South Africa’s green hydrogen ambitions will be tested by its ability to bridge policy with execution….… Read more (2 min)
Mauritania is set to launch its fourth green hydrogen project, the Megaton Moon, following the signing of an agreement with developer GreenGo Energy. Strategically located south of the capital, Nouakchott, the 6 GW facility will produce 339,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually upon completing its first phase in 2029. |
Currently, the Sahara Desert nation is home to three major green hydrogen projects: Green Aman, which aims to produce 1.7 million tonnes of green hydrogen and 10 million tonnes of green ammonia annually; Project Nour, expected to generate 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year; and the Infinity Power-Conjuncta Green Hydrogen Project, targeting the production of up to 8 million tonnes of green hydrogen or related products annually.
The project aligns with Mauritania’s ambition to position itself as a leading green hydrogen exporter, driven by rising global demand for clean energy as countries accelerate their decarbonisation efforts. According to Mauritania’s 2021 strategic roadmap, the country aims to secure 1.5% of the global hydrogen market and up to 1% of the green steel market by 2050. To achieve this, it plans to produce 20.1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
Our take: The launch of the Megaton Moon project marks a significant step in Mauritania’s green hydrogen journey.… Read more (2 min)
Moroccan firm Hydrojeel, a subsidiary of state-owned fertiliser producer OCP Group, has won a $32 million grant from Germany’s PtX Development Fund to develop the Jorf Hydrogen Platform. The facility will produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually using green hydrogen generated on-site. |
Morocco has positioned itself as a leader in Africa’s green hydrogen sector, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources. With 15 announced projects and a National Hydrogen Strategy targeting 30 TWh of demand by 2030 and 307 TWh by 2050, the country offers a favourable environment for large-scale hydrogen investments.
As part of this strategy, the North African nation is expanding its focus beyond hydrogen production to green hydrogen derivatives, particularly green ammonia. In February, global energy firm H2 Global Energy announced plans for a green ammonia plant in the country after successful feasibility studies. The Jorf Hydrogen Platform aligns with these ambitions, further solidifying Hydrojeel’s candidacy for funding.
Our take: Germany’s funding decision signals growing confidence in green ammonia as a scalable and economically viable application of hydrogen.… Read more (2 min)

Simon Inauen, Head of Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Program at GIZ Namibia, says, “To attract investment and scale Namibia’s green hydrogen sector, we need to de-risk the industry. A key factor in this is a clear, transparent, and legal framework.”
