Decarbonizing transport through green hydrogen in SA

The HySA Infrastructure, a South African hydrogen production company, in collaboration with Toyota South Africa Motors, successfully tested a Gen-2 hydrogen refueling protocol at North West University Potchefstroom in South Africa. This achievement highlights the country's progress to lead in green hydrogen production to decarbonize shipping and trucking sectors.

Why this matters: Transitioning to a renewable energy and green hydrogen economy could increase South Africa's GDP by nearly 6%.

  • South Africa's efforts in hydrogen technology testing and infrastructure development resonate with the broader global push for hydrogen fuel adoption.

  • South Africa's trucking sector is responsible for 63% of the country's transport emissions.

  • This transition could also create 2 million new jobs, addressing joblessness, poverty, and inequality.

  • In parallel, innovative hydrogen fuel cell technologies are being developed globally, such as the Scenic Vision SUV by a French brand and a hydrogen-fueled utility vessel by Cleanergy Solutions Namibia.
